The potential problems and additional threats posed during possible Fire service industrial action.

The potential problems and additional threats posed during possible Fire service industrial action.

RM Risk Management would like to make clients aware of the potential problems and additional threats posed during possible Fire service industrial action.
It is very likely that any fires that do occur may be more serious for various reasons, including: A delay in calling out the fire service, particularly if you have red care, A delay in the attendance of the firefighters, particularly if they are attending another incident elsewhere , overall the fire fighting attendance and capability will be lower than the standard Fire Service response

We strongly recommend our clients adopt some common sense practices during any periods of disruption which includes

  • None essential hot works banned during industrial action
  • High risk areas such as lift motor rooms, plants rooms and electrical risers, underground car parks are kept clear of combustible materials
  • Daily workplace inspections and a zero tolerance to waste being stored in these high risk areas
  • Zero tolerance on fire doors being wedged open
  • Reduce the risk of arson with skips being stored at least 10m from the building and not left full over weekends or during low occupancy periods and avoid waste such as pallets or cardboard being stored externally
  • Encourage tenants to power down non essential equipment at end of the working day
  • Manage smoking areas so bins are regularly emptied and butts cleaned up
  • Keep tenants updated on possible strike dates and hold meetings with fire wardens to brief on the fire safety controls you are putting in place, and what is expected from them, its important everyone is onboard including tenants, security and M+E staff
  • Remember the fire brigade not only fight fires but rescue people trapped in lifts, put notices in lifts to encourage tenants to use stairs out of hours, discuss with lift company contingency plans during the strike period so they can attend quickly and make sure security staff are briefed
  • Don’t allow window cleaning via cradles or abseiling during industrial action
  • Make sure automatic fire detection is not isolated during this period and faults are attended to in a timely manner
